Fermented and conditioned at low temperatures, German lagers tend to be simple, clean biers
with a light aroma and flavor. Although light lagers are the most popular, color can range
from a pale yellow to a dark brown.

Pilsners


Simplicity has been the key to the pilsner's success. Lightly kilned malt barley, noble hops, lager
yeast and water yield a clean, simple bier that is similar to a traditional lager. German pilsners
tend to be lighter, earthier and have a slighlty lower alcohol concentration that lager.

Doppelbocks


With alcohol concentrations ranging from 7.0% to over 9.0% by volume, the doppelbock (double
bock) is simply a stronger version of the traditional bock style. They range from a dark gold to
a dark brown color and tend to be sweet and malty with little detectable hops and a
noticeable alcohol flavor.

Weissbiers


Weissbier, or wheat bier, is the only German bier style that is technically an ale. All others are
lagers. Weissbiers replace a hefty amount of malted barley with malted wheat and use a special
strain of yeast, which gives the bier its characteristic banana and clove flavor. Hefeweizens, or
unfiltered wheat biers, are typically cloudy with an orange tint, and Dunkelweizens are their
dark wheat counterparts.

Oktoberfests
(fall): Oktoberfest biers, also known as Märzens, are typically full-bodied brews
with a rich flavor profile and a mild hop presence. Color can range from pale yellow, like
Hofbräu Oktoberfest, to a darker amber color, much like Spaten's version, which is now available
year-round!

Maibocks (spring): The Maibock style is a Helles (light) lager brewed to Bock strength, with
alcohol concentrations ranging from 6.3% to 7.5% by volume. Maibocks are typically less malty
than traditional bocks, but still have a relativey sweet flavor profile, a low hops presence
and a noticebale hint of alcohol.
